Possible cause for empty reports or crashes when scanning or updating virus database

We receive many bug reports about strange behavior by ClamWin (like empty reports and crashes when scanning or updating virus database). This behaviour can be caused by an incorrect COMSPEC environment variable value.

How can I submit useful bug reports?

The submitter does not include an email address. This is vital incase we need more information from you! "It doesn't work" is not a bug report Be verbose. Let us know all info that may be useful including scan reports, files, ClamWin version, OS version etc. We ask that you please read the Support Forum and FAQ first, before submitting a bug report. this includes looking at closed bugs. We have many many duplicates submitted. If you have a problem with a file, SUBMIT IT. Otherwise we can't test it ourselves Important: Some people aren't nice. If you say something mean, or rude - you WILL be ignored. If you are nice and polite, it will pay off. :-)

Warning DNS server is older than 3 hrs

There is no reason to be concerned - most likely you have a caching DNS server at the gateway and this is causing it. DNS query is designed to minimise load on the datbase server when determining if the database version is uptodate. But if this method fails it would just query the database server and still work

ERROR: Can't initialize the virus database

this happens if there is no virus database downloaded. 1. Did you select "Download Virus Database" during Setup and did run successfully? Check virus database download status by examining "Virus Database Update Report" available via "Display Reports" tray icon menu. If the download fails, are you behind a proxy server? If so, you need to configure it in the ClamWin preferences window.

Is the 7z format supported?

Yes. It has been available since version 0.88.5 The internal unpacker only supports LZMA codec, if you want full codecs support you can use --7zip additional command line option and 7z.exe executable.

How often is the virus database updated?

The virus database is usually updated several times a day. News of releases are posted to the clamav-virusdb mailing list, a web-based archive of which is at http://lurker.clamav.net/list/clamav-virusdb.html

Does it check incoming and outgoing e-mails?

If ClamWin is installed with Outlook integration, it will check all incoming and outgoing e-mails for viruses. E-mails are checked automatically when they are opened. If an incoming e-mail has a virus attachment, the attachment will be replaced with a report file.

I installed ClamWin with Outlook integration. Why doesn't it appear in Outlook?

ClamWin will not appear as an add-in. However, if it is properly installed, an extra menu option ("About ClamWin") will have been added to Outlook's Help menu.

How good is Virus Database in ClamWin?

ClamWin shares the virus database with ClamAV and it is updated several times a day. All new viruses are promptly added to the database. Although the total number of viruses may seem less than other commercial Antivirus vendors claim to have but if ClamAV database misses some viruses then these will be ancient species.

How can I check to see if it works?

Download the EICAR anti-virus test file from http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm This is not a virus, but a standard test file. Any anti-virus program should recognise it and treat it as a virus. ClamWin will report it as "Eicar-Test-Signature". The file is a DOS program, and if run it will print the message "EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!"
